A new study commissioned by Gallup reports that 70% of U.S. employees are either “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” at work, so The Simi Sara Show on CKNW AM 980 contacted Clear HR Consulting for human resources advice and expertise on what employers and employees can do to improve employee engagement.
Here are 3 things that employees can do today to improve their engagement with their job:
- Tell your manager what motivates and drives you, the ways you like to be managed, and the tools you need to accomplish your tasks.
- Discuss areas of concern with your manager in a respectful way, and offer suggestions for improvement. Don’t simply identify problems without offering ways to improve things.
- Assess your fit with the company you work for. Is there a match between:
-
- your personal values and the company’s values?
- the way you like to be managed and the management style of your supervisor?
- do you like the people you work with or not?
As well, here are 3 things that employers can do today to improve the engagement of their employees:
- Communicate the vision, purpose, goals, targets and key success factors of the company to your staff.
- Ensure each position has a clearly defined job description and sets out the expectations so employees know how they fit in.
- Determine for each employee what motivates them – how they learn, what their goals are, how they like to be communicated with, etc. so you can customize your managing and coaching approach to generate top performance.
