Dear Colleagues,
The recent Canadian Thanksgiving holiday provides us with an opportunity to reflect on what we are grateful for in our lives: strong connections with family & friends, good health, interesting work, etc.
It is also a time to reflect on how we may be more fortunate than many others, who may be suffering from difficult economic times, an illness or injury, or are just a little down on their luck.
In this edition of HR Smalltalk, we discuss how the involvement of your staff in your corporate philanthropy strategy can impact your workplace. As a way of giving thanks, read on for an opportunity to win a pair of U2 tickets, all by giving back to your community.
As always, if you have any questions or for more information, feel free to contact us at 604.688.3879.
Warm regards,

Cissy Pau

Corporate Philanthropy: Giving Back When Times are Tough
When companies are doing well, it's easy to support charitable causes and to make corporate donations. During difficult economic times, however, philanthropy is often one of the first initiatives to disappear.
Giving back during tough times is a great way to re-focus employees and to encourage staff to look beyond their immediate situation and look outwards to the community around them. Practicing corporate philanthropy can serve many benefits:
- Supporting company values
- Many companies have "supporting our community" as a company philosophy or value. Giving back will help to enforce that this value really is important for the company.
- Team-building
- Rallying employees together to support a common cause can bring employees together in a way that a staff meeting cannot.
- Foster empathy
- No matter how tough things seem, helping those in need makes us appreciate that our own situations aren't so bad when others are in much more dire straits.
- Sense of accomplishment
- Whether baking cupcakes for a fundraiser, cleaning up a park in your neighbourhood, or volunteering for one of hundreds of local charities, the sense of accomplishment and appreciation employees will receive will be inspiring.
- Build community
- Businesses, the people who work there, and the families who support them, are the backbone of any community. Giving back to that community serves to make it stronger, healthier and more vibrant.
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
At Clear HR Consulting, we were recently challenged to take $100 and make as big a difference as possible in the lives of others - and we had 4 days to do it! The winner would receive 2 tickets to a taping of the Oprah Winfrey show. Though we didn't win the tickets, we did manage to achieve some amazing results for Three Cups of Tea and the Central Asia Institute which supports literacy and education in the rural areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
This challenge got us thinking and has inspired us to issue a challenge of our own to encourage our clients, colleagues and HR Smalltalk readers to "give back".
Between now and 5 pm (Pacific Time) on October 23, 2009, we are challenging you to do something at your workplace which supports the theme of "giving back". The options are endless: gather clothing for a women's shelter; volunteer at a soup kitchen; initiate a penny drive to support a good cause - whatever you decide, bring your staff together and do good.
Let us know what your company does, along with your contact information, via email to info@clearhrconsulting.com by 5 pm (Pacific Time) on October 23, 2009 and you will be entered into a draw to win 2 floor seats to the U2 concert in Vancouver, BC on October 28, 2009. The winner will be notified by October 26th.
We look forward to hearing what great things you do!
The fine print:
- Contest open to Canadian residents and Canadian-registered companies.
- Only one entry per "giving back" initiative per company will be entered into the draw.
- The winner will be chosen at random from the entries received.
- The winner will be responsible for getting to Vancouver to attend the concert, at his/her own expense.
- The prize is a pair of general admission floor tickets for the October 28th U2 concert at BC Place, valued at $150. No cash equivalent will be provided.
- The winner of the tickets voluntarily assumes all risk and danger of personal injury and all hazards arising from or related in any way to the attendance at the event, whether occurring prior to, during or after the event. The winner agrees that Clear HR Consulting Inc. and its officers and employees are expressly released by the winner from claims arising from such causes.
